HVAC Troubleshooting Tips

Air conditioning and heating devices may run into a few dilemmas, here are some frequent HVAC issues, and some of the signs to look out for, an prevent the problem:

Your AC unit won’t turn on? Check these first:

  • The Thermostat. Why? Because sometimes the problem is as simple as making sure your system is set to “cool” instead of “heat.” Some systems, however, include a timer which can delay the unit’s activation, essentially delaying the cooling of your establishment. If your thermostat requires calibration, Elite HVAC is here to help you out.
  • The Power. How? By locating your main fuse panel, you can ascertain if either the fuse or circuit breaker for the equipment has blown or shut down. There are a few ways to fix this yourself, but we suggest if you do not have a lot of experience in electrical work, call Elite HVAC to help solve your air conditioning issues in Aliso Viejo.

Is your air conditioner blowing warm air instead of cold?

Here are a few potential problems:

  • First, ensure the outside unit is running. If the unit is up and running, ensure there are no blockages hindering the air flow through your system.
  • Dirty Filters. The system may actually be successful in conducting and creating cold air, but dirty filters prevent the cold air from moving through the ductwork. Clean air filters protect and enhance your air conditioning system to help it function correctly.
  • Low Refrigerant. Also known as Freon, this chemical is in charge of cooling the air, when the levels get low due to a leak or other reasons, the unit will not be able to produce cool air, so heat blows through your system, much to your dismay.

Does the air conditioner frequently cycle or not turn off?

  • First, ensure the outside unit is running. If the unit is up and running, ensure there are no blockages hindering the air flow through your system.
  • For frequently cycling systems, the problem could be that the system is not the right size to equip your house; if it is too large, it will rapidly reach the desired temperature, then will be signaled to cycle off. Once the temperature drops below that setting, the unit will be activated and the cycle will begin again. Another problem may be if the cool air is being blown directly onto the thermostat, or for a definite answer, call Elite HVAC.
  • Quite a few problems could be responsible for continuously running systems, including: the unit is too small to cool your home, the inside unit turns on, but the fan never shuts off. If this is the case, switch the thermostat to “off.” If the problem continues, cut off all power going to the system. Again, without electrical experience, it may be safer to call the Aliso Viejo air conditioning repair experts at Elite HVAC.

Clogged condensation lines or a frozen AC unit?

  • First, ensure the outside unit is running. If the unit is up and running, ensure there are no blockages hindering the air flow through your system.
  • If insects build their nests inside the drain line, this could clog the system. The part called a drip pan is intended for gathering water if the drain line is obstructed. If you see water in this pan, inject a gust of compressed air to remove any blockages. To eliminate any fungus buildup, pour a 50-50 solution of water and bleach into the drainpipe. As always, it is best to have a certified AC Repair-man handle the situation to prevent any further damage.
  • Frozen Units can have numerous causes, such as: improper airflow (a possible filter problem), dirty coils, or a malfunctioning blower fan, ensure no debris is clogging the system.
